Xander Week 77 – A Diaper Cream Review

April 29, 2008

Desitin OriginalIt occurred to me a few weeks ago that while I have reviewed several aspects of diapering – diapers, bags, etc., I never got around to reviewing diaper cream – and there are a lot of options out there. I don’t think that Xander is a particularly rashey kid, but he does get a diaper rash from time to time. Sometimes it gets bad – cracked skin, etc. We’ve tried a few different remedies, and found that the original works best for us.

At my baby shower, I got a wide variety of diaper creams – Aveno, Huggies, Desitin Creamy and Budreau’s Butt Paste. I tried them all, and found some interesting results.

Aveno, Huggies and Desitin Creamy all work about the same. The consistency is that of a hand lotion. It goes on easily, wipes off your hands easily, but also wipes off of baby’s bottom pretty easily too.

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is much thicker, sticks better (on your hands too of course), but it’s brown, which can be kind of confusing when you’re trying to determine if there is a “little present” in the diaper…

I fell victim to the advertising of Desitin and purchased some Desitin Clear. It was a similar consistency as the creamy, but clear. They advertised that you could use Desitin Clear on other body parts – chapped skin, etc. Xander never really had that trouble, so we didn’t try that.

Eventually we settled on the Desitin Original. It’s a thicker consistency, and a pain to get off your hands, but it sticks on bottoms much better, and I find that it clears up diaper rashes faster as well.

I know some people mix up their own concoctions – a blend of a few different brands. I’ve never gotten that creative. Xander has has some painful rashes, but we’ve managed to survive ok with the Desitin Original.

  1. Hi! I don’t know how I came across you blog but i love it! Just wanted to comment…I use A&D ointment and i love it! I also tried everything you mentioned above which I received from my babyshower and love the A&D the best! A tub last forever. I have a 6 month old and still have more than half a tub. I use it on her cheeks (face) when she gets chapped. works on cuts burns scraps also.

  2. Hi Jennifer – I’m glad you’re enjoying the site! I haven’t tried A&D, so I’ll definitely have to pick a tube up next time we run out. Thanks for the suggestion :-)

  3. Yeah, the only thing we’ve used for Samantha so far is A+D. Sam doesn’t get rashes very much, so we’re still on the first tube. I basically looked at all the creams I got a my baby shower, and picked the one that expired first! I haven’t compared it to anything else, but I think it works very well!

  4. Hey Sara…you don’t know me but our little boys started daycare at approximately the same time. My little guy and Ryan were in the yellow room together till we were able to finally make the financial sacrifice for me to stay home. I always loved Xander’s crazy hair ’cause my older son Jake had the same when he was young. I found your blog thru Abby B., who I’ve met at the Plymouth Mom’s Club and think it is such a great idea. I had started a blog recently as well, to help keep distant family/friends up to date on our crazy life. As of yet I have not found the time to do more than a few posts. I applaud your effort to keep such a timeline of your families life and experiences!!

  5. Sara,

I love the butt paste. My Emily gets rashes all the time because she has VERY sensitive skin. My husband bought the butt paste because he didn’t know brand I normally bought and being a boy, he thought butt paste sounded funny. It turned out to be the best I think because it is so thick. Go figure! So, my husband found the best stuff because he thinks the word butt is amusing.

I guess you can never know how you are going to learn something.

    Keep up the great blogging!

    Mary B.

  6. Hi Keri – I’m sorry we didn’t get to meet while our kids were at day care together. I’m sure you are enjoying your time home though. It is tough to keep up on a blog regularly. That was why I started labeling posts by the week, so that I would be able to keep track of where I was, and know that next week I would have to come up with something else to say ;-)

  7. Hi Mary,

The butt paste is definitely the thickest ointment I have come across. We actually got it as a joke gift – a boy thinking the name was funny ;-)
