Week 20 – No new ultrasound
November 2, 2005
Zach and I met with the other doctor in our practice this week. He looked through our chart and said the ultrasound looked good, so it sounds like there won’t be a new one for us. This news was entirely disappointing, since that means we most likely won’t know the sex of the baby until it comes out. As someone who needs to have everything in her life planned, this is pretty challenging for me. Not that I can’t buy plenty of gender neutral things, but it would be nice to narrow down some names, and maybe pick up something pink and frilly or cute and blue, but I will unfortunately have to wait a few months for that surprise. We also didn’t get the results of the Down syndrome and spina bifida testing that I had done last month, so we still don’t know if the baby will have a higher risk of having either disease. I had resolved not to worry until I needed to, but I was also hoping to have the results back by now. If the probabilities are high, then we will likely schedule an amniocentesis test. Though this increases the risk of miscarriage, it will tell us much more definitively one way or the other if either illness is something to worry about. On the plus side, an amniocentesis can also definitively tell us the sex.
I’m still feeling pretty good, which is a positive, though my round ligaments have been rather sore lately. For those of you lucky enough to not know anything about round ligaments, those are the ligaments that hold up your uterus. As things start to stretch and expand, so do your ligaments. One generally feels the pain along your bikini line. It is a relief to know that this pain is normal, but it doesn’t make it any less uncomfortable. I would like to think that maybe my ligaments will stop stretching soon, but I have a feeling that is just wishful thinking on my part. If you want to read more on round ligaments, the Baby Center has a good article.
I have just had my 20 week scan and they werent able to tell me the sex of my baby, which i did kinda want to kno, they said it was in an awkward position. But they did say the baby was very healthy whcih is all that matters really. Just have 2 wait 4 months and then ill know what im having eh, oh well..be a nice suprise wont it lol.
And how would you feel if a well meaning DCYF worker came to your door as your child reached age 1- 18 to take him/her away because ther might me a liklihood of harm,,,,,,,,
don’t worry about your baby having down syndrome and spina bifita. Most of those test in my experiance come out positive and then the baby comes healthy as can be:) As far as the gender goes you could google a place where all they do is tell you the gender of the baby and a video of the ultrasound session. I had it done with my last two and will have it done with this one:) It’s so much fun to see your baby playing around.
Hi Ericka – thanks for the support and suggestions. I think it’s tough not to worry about those things. I think with the next pregnancy, I’ll definitely put more research into optional ultrasounds. Unfortunately, we live in a pretty rural state, so I imagine it’ll be challenging to find places that do that sort of thing around here.
hey sara i just wanted to tell u that i am 19 weeks pregnant and i will be geting my ultrasound in 2 week so i cant wait to know what it is but i am 99 percent its a boby i did a ultra sound las week here in my job and they say its a boy because we saw something that looked it was a boy and my heart tells me its a boy but ill be sure in 2 weeks.
Hi Evelyn – congrats on your pregnancy! I hope that your 2nd ultrasound will tell you definitely. It’s funny, lots of people asked me what I thought I was having – apparently lots of mothers just have a feeling, and often turn out to be right. I didn’t really have any clue, so it was a big surprise when Xander came out. But if your heart tells you you’re having a boy, my bet is you are! Good luck to you, and please keep us posted!
HI EVERYONE, I AM 18 WEEKS AND I AM SCHEDULED TO HAVE AN ULTRASOUND IN TWO DAYS. I AM SO NERVOUS I COULD SCREAM. I REALLY WANT A GIRL AND LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE I FEEL AS THOUGH I WILL. I WANTED TO KNOW AT WHAT WEEK WILL I FEEL MY BABY MOVE?

Hi everyone! I am 19 weeks and havnt felt my baby kick so I Googled 19 weeks and came across your website. Thanks to you all you put a smile on my face with your posts. I now know Im normal! well besides the fact that I had hoola hooped my tummy around a few times to try and see if that would get a bit of movement happpening. My ultra sound is next week and Im so excited that im crossing every possible protruding part that I can in hope that I find out the sex. Ill keep you posted.
Hi Dannielle, congrats on the pregnancy! I hadn’t heard of the hoola hoop trick – that’s kind of funny
I hope your ultrasound goes well next week and that your baby cooperates so that you can find out the sex – just be prepared for lots of pink or blue gifts if you know what you’re having
Good luck, and I can’t wait to hear how it goes!
