Week 18 – The Sonogram

May 18, 2006

Sonogram - 18 weeksSo this week was the big moment – the sonogram. A few mothers has mentioned that it was somewhat uncomfortable – having a full bladder while someone is pressing on your stomach. I didn’t really give it much thought until the morning when I started sucking down my liter of water. I had to drink 1 liter between 9:30 and 10:00 am, which I did. At 10:02, I needed to pee. Of course, the sonogram wasn’t scheduled for 11:00 am, so I had a while to wait. By the time I got to the radiology waiting room, I was doing the pee-pee dance. When the technician (Toni) finally called me in, I explained that I was pretty certain my bladder was going to explode any minute. Toni let me take out 5 plastic cups full of urine (not an easy task!) I made it through about half the procedure (which ended up taking almost 2 hours!) before my bladder was full again. Toni let me take out another 5 plastic cups of urine (even harder to stop the second time around). The reason I was in there so long was that Toni, and then the doctor on call (Dr. Trent) were unable to catch a picture of all four chambers of the heart – they could get two and two, but not all four. Toni suspects that I will be back again in a few weeks for another try. Since the best they could give us was “maybe a girl?” I guess I won’t complain too much if we have to go back, but I’m not looking forward to filling up my bladder again!

  3. its just another sonogram picture nothing so speical about it get a 4 d sonogram and lets us see your baby really doing something cute>

  4. Hi Sara, I would love to have a 4D sonogram. Heck, I’d love to have a second 2D sonogram, but my practioners only approved one, and since I don’t live in an area with 4D sonogram capabilities, I was kind of out of luck… On top of that, my insurance isn’t the best, and since I’m nowhere near rich, I can’t afford to pay for my own independent sonogram. I know pretty much every sonogram looks the same, but this one is special to me, since it’s my kid, and it’s the inside of my stomach… I still like it :-)

  5. I think every sonogram is special bc that is a baby growing. I really don’t think if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. Not mentioning any names. This sonogram is great bc they rarely catch the baby sucking there thumb. I know bc I am on pregnancy #4!!!!!!!!!

  6. Hi Sara – congrats on baby #4! I admire your stamina – at this point I can’t imagine finding the energy to raise 4 kids! I’m glad you like to sonogram – I bet in the 4 pregnancies you’ve managed to get some good sonogram pictures as well :-)

  7. I just wanted to say I think its cute too. they are all so exciting im on #3 and anxiously awaiting my sonogram and am just as excited with this one as i was with 1 and 2. also you dont have to be rich to have a 4d ive found ones as low as 100.00. 1800sonogram they can located one near you and how much but i have heard from my midwife a study came out and said it causes hearing problems in kids that have had 4d, so something to consider we decided it wasnt worth the risk. congrats and good luck.

  8. Hi Ashlee, congrats on your 3rd! Perhaps I will look into a 4-d sonogram the next time around. I’m not sure how many places around here offer them, as I live in a pretty rural area in a relatively rural state. I, like you, would want to do a little more research on the hearing side effects.

  9. i have been feeling pregnant i have had an ultrasound that says i am not pregnant but i have been getting a feeling of something moving in my stomach this has been going on for about 3 weeks now! WHATS HAPPENING CAN ANYONE HELP????

  10. i have been feeling pregnant i have had two faint but positive pregnancy tests i have also been feeling movement in my stomach but the ultrasound showed that i was not pregnant?? whats going on? could i still be pregnant?

  11. Hi Holly, I don’t have many explanations for you, perhaps a psychosomatic pregnancy? I would get a second opinion if I were you… good luck Holly!

  12. That is so cool. I cant wait until i find out what I am having I am exactly 18 weeks now and I will know what I am having November the 8th that would be next Wednesday. I hope that everything is going well with you and you family.

  13. Hi Jessica – congrats on your baby! Today is the 8th and I’m hoping that your sonogram is going well and that your baby is cooperative enough for you to find out what you’re having – please let us know!

  14. Hey fellow pregnant woman! I am 30 weeks and we just found out for sure that we are having a girl! We have decided to name her Madalyn and even call her by her name now. Good luck to all of you who get up 3 or 4 times an hour and who get constantly kicked and punched!

  15. Hi April – congratulations on your baby girl! I think that picking the name was one of the reasons we wanted to find out, so that we could stop calling the baby “it”. You must be so excited, and it certainly sounds like you are enjoying the frequent trips to the bathroom, and the constant reminders of the baby through continual kicks, elbows, punches, etc. Enjoy your holidays and I’ll be sending you happy thoughts of a relatively pain-free delivery and healthy baby girl!

  16. Wow, long sonogram time. I get mine in two weeks and I’m excited. We’re finding out what it is this time. Um Kim person…what you’re feeling is probly gas. Have you changed your diet lately? after I had my son I felt “phantom” movements too…it’s odd but I’m sure it’s nothing. The movements you were always used to as being normal feel a lot like fetal movements and after you have a child you associate them with that. Movements in your abdomen can also be parasites as well….perhaps you have a worm? no Joke!!

  17. Hi Leah – congrats on the pregnancy, and hopefully the baby cooperates in two weeks when you have your sonogram! Please let us know how it turns out!

  18. For Holly and Kim, GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR and get checked for worms, I’m pregnant now and I had worms in the past,(roundworms), some symptoms are eating like you’re pregnant, nausea, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, feeling like you’re pregnant, and itching anus (not kidding) I had my stool sample come back negative but I knew I has worms cause I paid attention to what was coming out and one time the worm came out by itself, yes I expelled a worm it looked like a piece of spaghetti and was like 5-6 inches long. Keep your eyes open and talk to doctors!

  19. P.S. The only symptom I can think of that I have now that I’m pregnant that I didn’t have when I had roundworms was that when I change my eating habits I dont get sick later in pregnancy. When I had worms, it didn’t mattter, one cracker made me sick and I had to keep eating and sleeping all day. Plus, I missed a period completely when I got pregnant, no P.M.S. nothing, but I did have crapms for the 1st 5 weeks of my pregnancy. But seriously, pay attention to what’s coming out. You can get rid of worms by using pin-x but DON’T until you are sure you’re not pregnant. It’s like poison, it wont kill you but you will get really sick after taking it and then the worms will be gone. Make SURE BEFORE TREATING YOURSELF though.

  20. Hi Christina – boy it sounds like you had a rough time with those worms! It is excellent advice though, and hopefully Holly, Kim, and anyone else who happens upon this site with those symptoms will find it useful. Thanks!

  21. Hi Sara I’m 17 weeks pregnant tomorrow my next appointment is the 15 of February today is the 10 and also my birthday I wish they were doing my scan on the 15 but unfortunately I have to wait till the next appointment for my sono what a bummer anyhow I know how you feel I remember how I felt with my first baby my son which was able to be seen first sono be cause he spread his legs and put his personals right up to the scanner but even today when i see his sono pictures it give me great elation to look at them it is very special and always will be to see your baby growing inside of your body never mind what some people have to say they obviously either have never had a baby or are richy rich jerks who think they are better because everything has been handed to them anyhow congrats on the baby!

  22. Hi Loni – congratulations on your 2nd pregnancy, and happy birthday! It is definitely frustrating to have to wait longer for your sonogram, but the longer you wait, the easier it is to tell if you’re having a boy or a girl :-) Please keep us posted and let us know how the sonogram turns out! Good luck!

  23. hey everyone,
I am 13 weeks pregnant and the doctor said she is going to find out the sex of the baby at my next appt on March 14th.. but i will only be 16 weeks and 4 days. what do you guys think about that? do you think she can tell so soon? please let me know!

  24. Hi Tasha – congratulations on your pregnancy! I had never heard of anyone being able to definitively figure out the sex at such an early stage. At 18 weeks the technician we had said that the baby was still a little small to say anything with certainty. But, maybe your doctor has a more advanced machine or something. If I were you, I’d be very excited about knowing the sex so early, but I also would try not to be too surprised if another ultrasound later on shows something different. Good luck, and please let us know how everything turns out!

  25. hi,
your sonagram was awsome you are lucky you got a great pic of your baby im on my 3rd baby and i love all the sonagrams i get well good luck im now 16 weeks 2 day and ive had 1 stilbirth so if you know your baby is ok than thats what matters goodluck and you have a cute babypic

  26. Has nothing to do with the topic but I just had to ask…I just want to know if any of you had the AFP test done/US and had markers show pushing for DS?

  27. Hey I’m 19 weeks and two days and i had my ultrasound yesterday and found out my baby is healthy and a boy!

  28. Hi Be – congratulations!!! It’s always a relief to find out the baby is healthy, an so exciting to find out if you’re having a boy or a girl – do you have any thoughts for names yet? Please keep us posted on how you are doing, and good luck!

  29. hi i am 22 weeks with twin girls had a scan last week all looked good but still only feeiling small fluttering movement mostly in late afternoon is this normal when will they start realy going for it?

  30. Hi Sara – twins, wow! Congratulations!! I don’t have much experience with twins, so I’m not sure if I’ve got any good answers about their movement. One could guess that with two, there is a little less room to move around, and therefore, less room to get up enough momentum to give you a really good jab. However, I have heard of women not feeling much movement before 25 weeks as well, so perhaps it’s just that your girls are dainty little ones who are politely wiggling around, and won’t really start kicking at you for a few more weeks. As I often recommend, try sitting or laying someplace quiet, and see how much movement you can feel. And if you are still worried, call your doctor – if they aren’t able to alleviate your concerns over the phone, perhaps they’ll have you go in for a check up. Good luck, and please keep us posted on how you are doing!!

  31. Hi! I am working on my 3rd kiddo – iam 19 wks and 1 day. Haven’t felt much movement. No kicking just feels like the baby is moving around. Like 3 days ago I felt tons of kicking, or so I thought…haven’t felt anything like that since. So maybe it was just gas??? My ultrasound is on Monday, so I dont want to go it just becuz Iam a little worried. Any thoughts anyone??

  32. Hi Stacie – congrats on your third! I don’t think you’ve got much to worry about if you haven’t felt much at 19 weeks – just a few days ago a woman posted about being 22 weeks along with twins, and she wasn’t feeling much movement either. I know it’s scary to find out what’s really happening, but I think it’s also a relief to know – and I bet that once you have the ultrasound you’ll find that everything is going along just as it’s supposed to. If you think you’ll be extra worried this weekend, try calling your doctor – perhaps they can alleviate your concerns over the phone, or bring you in for a quick check up. Good luck – and try not to worry – enjoy the ultrasound, and the first picture of the latest edition to your family!

  33. Hi, I am 27 weeks and 6 days. I am having my 4th boy. My OB appt last week they said I am measuring 32 which according to my doctor, is way to big for dates. I am scheduled for an ultrasound next week to see if the baby is getting really big, or if it is something else. My entire family is convinced that it is twins and the second is just hiding out, because nothing has ever even hinted at that with other tests.

  34. I was preggers with twins too, and I found I was about 22 weeks when I felt the first unmistaken movement. The thing is, we didnt know it was twins, but I knew something was up when I found that alot of the movement was felt more in the rectal area!!! That’s when we got suspicious, because I’m a twin as well, and my mom used to tell us how she cud feel us EVERY where.
Good luck girls!!!! Hope you are ALL feeling terrific!!

    Diane
