Week 14 - Still Expanding!

March 29, 2006

Fetus, 14 weeksI’m feeling pretty good this week. My morning sickness is pretty much gone, except sometimes when I brush my teeth (I know, it’s kind of weird - sensitive gag reflex…). My stomach continues to grow, which I’m still not ready for. Many of my clothes are too tight for me now. I’m going shopping for maternity clothes this weekend. I’ve picked up a few things here and there, but this is my first shopping excursion. It should be fun (I hope). I’ve been using two pregnancy websites, BabyCenter and PregnancyWeekly. I actually did quite a bit of surfing before I settled on these two. I like PregnancyWeekly because they have an online calendar where I can add journal entry type things to keep track milestones during the pregnancy (which my blog is also doing…). BabyCenter has a good weekly newsletter that I’ve been enjoying. Zach has been entirely patient with me, which has been great. At night when I’m settled in with Oscar (the cat) on my lap, he patiently gets me whatever food I happen to desire (as long as it’s in the house and not entirely complicated). It’s nice having people bring you things - I’m definitely enjoying that part of pregnancy! I’ve also been reading two books, What to Expect When You’re Expecting (of course), which my sister Cait bought for me and The New Pregnancy week-by-week, which my friend Jenny bought for me. The books and websites tell me that the baby is approximately 4-4 1/2 inches long now. He/she has translusent skin and we’re working on growing bone marrow this week. So things seem to be moving along well, and so far the books/websites are right - the second trimester has been much better than the first!

  2. i am 17 weeks pregnant with my very first baby. I felt the little tacker move when i was 13 weeks pregnant. Being pregnant is the most greatest thing that has ever happened to me considering the childhood i had and the the way i was dragged up not brought up. I never thought i would ever be a mum because of all the damage my father caused to my body especially my genitals and baby making organs. But miricalse do happen and this is the best feeling in the world. I know they say that most women DONT feel the baby move untill about 16-20 weeks but i guess my little bub is a fast learner already and he/she wants me to know that the little human inside me is truly a miracle.

  3. Hi Ange - congratulations on your little miracle! I know they say that most women feel their babies move around 16-20 weeks, but that is just the average - I’m sure some women feel their baby move much earlier, and some probably don’t feel anything until a bit later. It is nice to feel that movement though, isn’t it? Many mothers I’ve talked to have said they actually miss that feeling after they’ve given birth, so I guess we should enjoy it while it lasts! I admire your strength and perserverence given the childhood that you mentioned, and I know that you will be an amazing parent for your child. Good luck to you and your little miracle!

  4. Hi,

I noticed that you were reading a few books on pregnancy. I am 14 weeks - this little one was a surprise to my fiance and I!

I wasn’t very happy about it at first - mostly becase I was so terrified of giving birth and just going through the whole process. Then, my fiance brought me “Up the Duff” by Kaz Cooke….

It’s a fantastic read and I am in stitches all the way through. I also have ” What to expect when you’re expecting” but it scares me somewhat - everything is too official for me and I can’t seem to stay focussed. Whereas Kaz Cooke’s book takes a lighter look at pregnancy as well as being quite informative.

It’s not overly detailed, just just tells you what you need to know… but then just alleviated my concerns about the … hmmm…er… “ickier” sides of pregnancy too.

A great read and highly recommended!

  5. Hi Cayla - Congratulations on your pregnancy! It is a bit intimidating to think about everything that’s going to happen, and how your lives are going to change, etc. Labor in particular is a pretty scary concept. I just keep reminding myself that it won’t last forever - I know it’ll feel like forever when it’s going on, but there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for the book recommendation - I’m always looking for new books to read. Now that I’m nearing the end, I’ve been reading The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg. I got it as a gift at my baby shower, but I’ve been enjoying it, as most of Tracy’s advice is pretty simple, and has logical explanations. Since I’ve never raised an infant before, I can use all the suggestions that I can get! Good luck to you - I’m sure you’ll do fine through this whole adventure :-)

  6. Well, this is all new to me with these “Blogs”. But, I think it’s great that fellow pregnant woman can give comments & share with others… Kinda of soothing, actually! I’m 11 weeks pregnant, and SO excited. Just wish this sickness would GO AWAY! I’m enjoying reading everyone’s comments.

  7. Hi Gabriella - congrats on your pregnancy! I wish your sickness would go away too - it’s such an awful feeling! On the bright side, you’re almost at the 12 week mark, where that awful sickness goes away for most women, so hang in there and hopefully you’ll start feeling better soon! Good luck!

  8. Hi everyone,
I am 12 weeks along and this is my 3rd. Not only am I showing faster than the other two, my pregnancy symptoms are different and my doctors practicioner gave me an emergency ultrasound because I was spotting and he said the babys to little to be felt. WHICH is untrue because I have been feeling my baby since week 11 and It is notttt gas. So I am hoping that the baby will be a boy since I have two girls already! Good Luck everyone

  9. Hi Tasha - congratulations on your 3rd! I hope that everything is ok after the emergency ultrasound. Hopefully in a few more weeks you’ll have another one and be able to find out if you’re having a boy or a girl. Good luck to you and please keep us posted if you have a few minutes to do so!

  10. thanks sara. I had my other ultrasound on Feb 14th and the baby looks ok. So my other drs appt is on March 14th she said shes going to try and determine the sex of the baby but I will only be 16 weeks 4 days. Do you think they can really tell? I sure do hope so! Im getting so anxious!! talk to you soon!

  11. Great to read the comments by you guys.i just want to respond to the comment by tasha, posted on the 26th of feb.I have just been for my first scan and they said my baby was 12 weeks and six days. From my calculations thats impossible, not to mention the fact that my stomach is already pretty big.i actually thought I was about 16 weeks too.Oh well who knows, but i am a little doubtful as to their exact calculations. We do have to take into account afterall that babies grow differently for each person. But at 16 weeks they should be able to tell the sex of your baby, they rarely get that wrong thankfully.Anyway good luck.

  12. i’m 14 weeks pregnant and my belly have gotten bigger than i expected and this is my firsy baby, i’ve gained 10 lbs in the last 3 months i went from 115lbs to 125lbs. it seem incredible .

  13. I’m two days shy of 13 weeks and am scared and excited! I’ve never been pregnant before and am on my own, so I’m trying to do as much research as I can to give myself a better idea as to what to expect. I have been sick everyday since just 3 weeks pregnant and am ready for the end of that! Any tips?

  14. Hi Becca - congratulations! It is scary being on your own and pregnant, but I’m sure you’ll do just fine. There are plenty of books and websites devoted to pregnancy - I would imagine that you’re already reading What To Expect When You’re Expecting, and my favorite pregnancy websites were babycenter.com and pregnancyweekly.com. The morning sickness is pretty rough sometimes. I think lots of women come up with their own coping mechanisms. One woman I used to work with had a doctor tell her to eat cheese as a late night snack because cheese takes longer to digest, so when you wake up in the morning, your stomach isn’t as empty, and you in theory don’t feel as ill. Of course you can always eat crackers, (saltines) and ginger ale - ginger in general is supposed to help with nausea. I found some yummy ginger snap cookies that helped me. Good luck Becca - and please keep us posted on how you are doing!

  15. i am only 9 weeks pregnant but i con no longer fir into any of my clothes. This is my third child with my youngest being 7 and my oldest being 11. Do you really start showing this soon with third babies?

  16. Hi Angel - congratulations on your 3rd! From what I can gather from comments on my blog is that with each child, the potential for showing earlier increases. Apparently it has something to do with our muscles loosening after the first and then subsequent pregnancies. I wouldn’t worry about showing early (unless you were hoping to keep the pregnancy quiet for a few more weeks…) Good luck, and please keep us posted on how you are doing!

  17. 18. Hi everyone I have just found this brilliant website, how loveley to read about other mums to be and to be able to relate to you all. I am 14 wks and 4 days with my second pregnancy, I have 22 month old twin boys (jack & Alfie) although its not my first pregnancy it certainly feels like it as every thing is so different this time , im not sure if thats because I have the boys keeping me busy or if its due to having just the one. Im hoping for a girl this time but wouldnt be disapointed with another boy. The care I am recieving this time feels a little non existant, I had my dating scan at 8 weeks and now nothing until 21 wks when I have my next one which feels strange as with the boys I had regular monthly scans, I feel a bit forgotten about and am considering paying for private scan.I hope you are all well and look forward to reading your updates soon.

  19. Hi everyone. I am 14 weeks today. I found out at 7 weeks I’m having a boy!! this is my 3rd. I have two girls already.
if anyone is interested in finding out what they are having early instead of waiting for the ultrasound at 20 weeks the name of the website is Tellmepinkorblue.com
    good luck and Congrats :)

  20. Hi everyone hope you are all feeling ok, thanks Melissa for details of the tellmepinkorblue website, i might give that a go. I decided to go for a scan this week, I paid to go to a local private clinic it cost me £70 but was worth it as I got the reassurance I needed that everything was ok, she has also told me there is a 70% chance its a girl which is great news! My 20wk scan will hopefully be more conclusive. has anyone had any cravings yet? I cant seem to get enough breakfast cereal at the moment,I had to get out of bed the other night for a bowl, its the milk I want but it has to be on cereal not in a glass..how strange! Take care everyone, look forward to your updates.

  21. hi everone. i am 14 weeks tommoro wit my second baby. my first is a boy of 3 years. i have been doing a lot of reaserch and looking at lots of pictures of people also 14 weeks. and i am shocket to see they all have a baby bump. i dont have even a slight bump. how come? i thought with second pregnancys you get more noticible more quickly. i cant understand it. it wories me so much. why am i not showing at all yet??

  23. Hey, My name is Renee I am 14 weeks as of today. This is my first preganacy I am very excited and scared. I have been researching the web alot becuase I dont know alot about being pregant I cant wait to find out what I am having I have to wait another week. I think I feel my baby moving but I am not sure, it feels like gas on one side of my belly. Is that wierd or normal?
    Good Luck everyone!

  24. Hi Renee - congratulations on your pregnancy! I’m impressed that your doctor will be able to tell the sex at 15 weeks. With my first they told me that 18 weeks was a little too early to tell… Most everything you read will tell you that you can expect to feel movement as early at 16 weeks, but I’ve certainly heard of mothers not feeling movement until much later, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some mothers felt movement a few weeks earlier. Any twinges I’ve felt so far I’ve just discounted as gas - mostly because I don’t want to get my hopes up ;-) Good luck to you, and please keep us posted on how you are doing!
