Xander Week 27 - Our first trip without the baby…

March 29, 2007

100_5449.JPGLast week Zach and I went on a trip to Las Vegas. It was planned well before Xander’s arrival, and although Vegas wasn’t my ideal vacation spot, Zach had a conference there, so it ended up being a cheaper vacation, all things considered. While Zach and I were in Vegas, Xander stayed with a series of relatives. Xander did fine with his family, and I’m sure the whole event was harder on us than it was on him. I knew I was going to miss Xander, but it almost surprised me how much. There were lots of babies out there, and every time I saw one, I first compared the size to Xander’s size, and then I wanted to chase the baby down and play with it, because I couldn’t play with my baby. We flew home very late, and didn’t get to my in-law’s until 2:30 am. It took every ounce of self control that I possess not to wake Xander as soon as we walked in the door, but I knew he hadn’t been sleeping great that week, and I didn’t want him to wake up in the middle of the night and not go back to sleep. All in all, the trip was a success, and it provided Xander with some excellent bonding time with our extended family. I am very happy to be home though - and it feels so wonderful to cuddle my little boy!

Week 17 - Cruising With Baby

May 18, 2006

Fetus - week 17Everyone says to get your travel out of the way before you have kids, because after you’re a parent, your footloose, fancy free days are gone. So, my last who-rah was a cruise around the caribbean while I was 17/18 weeks pregnant. A good idea in theory, but somewhat depressing when you’re watching everyone else guzzle their free rum, and you’re sitting around wondering whether or not the fruit juice has alcohol in it.

For the most part, the cruise was amazing, and tons of fun. But, I would definitely suggest that if at all possible, try to not be pregnant while cruising - there are lots of people in the caribbean who would love to give you free booze, and you can’t help but feel like a party-pooper when you go to bed at 9pm entirely sober while the rest of the boat stays up to party ’till the wee hours of the morning.

I can honestly say that I have taken my kid to more bars that I can to count. I am also completely ready with a witty come-back about travel if my kid ever complains that we never take him/her anywhere. I did have to make my travel companions promise that the next time we take a trip I am not pregnant (so, according to my calculations, I should be looking forward to that in 20 years or so…) ;-)
