Week 26 - Painting the Nursery
June 20, 2006
This week we painted the nursery. When we bought the house a little over two years ago, we spent a week going through the entire house and took down all of the wallpaper and carpeting, and painted all of the walls white, and all of the already painted trip a buttery yellow. Since then, we have been going slowly from room to room, repainting and decorating in colors that we plan to keep for a while. Since I found the perfect wallpaper border at Dreamtime Baby (Lillypad Wallpaper Border), I had decided to use yellow and green in the nursery. For a while I debated whether to paint the walls yellow and the trim green or vice versa. As the trim is already yellow from the first painting, I finally decided to save myself some work and simply paint the walls green. My mother and sister (Cait) helped me pick out the right shade of green, which turned out to be Kilz, Tea Garden. They also helped me clean out the nursery, and organize the other room, which has recently become Zach’s closet/storage area. Zach then moved the bed and bureau that was still in the room for me, and I took a Friday off and decided to get the painting done. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law (P.J. & Mandy) came up to help me paint. The walls took less than an hour with their help, and look great. Zach asked if we could paint the ceiling a pale blue, and since this was the first and only request regarding nursery design that he had, I agreed. The following day I painted the celing Kilz, Fresh, which is a very pretty pale blue. Some people say that Kilz paint is horrible. I personally think that Kilz paint is the best. You can find it usually at WalMart. The price is reasonable, and it coats great. In the nursery, I only had to use one coat for both the walls and the ceiling. Also, Kilz dries incredibly fast, which is quite handy if you need to do more than one coat. And if that weren’t enough, Kilz also doesn’t have a very strong smell. My doctor said that painting with latex paint was safe for me, as long as the room was well ventilated. I made sure to keep all of the windows open with a box fan sucking air out of the room for both days. Even without that, the odor of the paint is very minimal, and really didn’t bother me at all. So, the nursery is painted. It’s kind of exciting because now it feels like we’re getting a room ready for a new member of the family. It makes the whole thing seem just a little more real. I still have to figure out what to do with the floor, and Zach doesn’t seem all that interested in figuring that out, so it looks like that will be up to me as well. If I have my way, I’ll have a carpet in there before the end of the month, so we’ll see how well that works out…
Also, my friend Jenny gave me a new book called Spirit of the Nursery, which has been quite an interesting read - Thanks Jenny!
