The Nursery is Complete!

September 4, 2006

Nursery PictureSo, my nursery is finally complete. It’s been mostly ready to go for about a month now, but we hadn’t put up the wallpaper boarder. Of course, I was silly and only ordered one role, so when my very kind mother-in-law came up to put on the boarder while I was at work, she wasn’t able to finish the room, as she ran out of wallpaper… So, I ordered more, and then we finished the project this past weekend. I am quite pleased with the way the room turned out. As you can see from the picture, we’ve got the crib all set and ready to go whenever the little one is big enough to sleep in there. We’ve got a single bed in the room so whatever parent is on night duty can catch some Z’s or cuddle with the baby, there are two bureaus stocked with clothes, blankets, etc. There is a shelf in the closet that is the start of what will hopefully be an extensive child’s library. The glider is just waiting to rock a baby, and we ended up with diapers galore (yay!) I’ve put some in the nursery, some in our room, and some downstairs with the bathing supplies, so we should be all set there as well. Hopefully the little one will like the theme that I’ve picked out for them. Even if I had known the sex of the baby, I still think I would have gone with this theme because I like it so much, and it’s not overwhelmingly pink or blue, or any one color. I’m sure at some point our kid will want to re-do the room. Hopefully by then our bedroom plans will have been completed, and we can move the baby (then a much larger child) into our old room, and redecorate in some way that they like (and something that I can stand…) But for now, I’m just happy to have this room, which feels very calm and peaceful right now, done.

Week 26 - Painting the Nursery

June 20, 2006

Painting NurseryThis week we painted the nursery.  When we bought the house a little over two years ago, we spent a week going through the entire house and took down all of the wallpaper and carpeting, and painted all of the walls white, and all of the already painted trip a buttery yellow.  Since then, we have been going slowly from room to room, repainting and decorating in colors that we plan to keep for a while.  Since I found the perfect wallpaper border at Dreamtime Baby (Lillypad Wallpaper Border), I had decided to use yellow and green in the nursery.  For a while I debated whether to paint the walls yellow and the trim green or vice versa.  As the trim is already yellow from the first painting, I finally decided to save myself some work and simply paint the walls green.  My mother and sister (Cait) helped me pick out the right shade of green, which turned out to be Kilz, Tea Garden.  They also helped me clean out the nursery, and organize the other room, which has recently become Zach’s closet/storage area.  Zach then moved the bed and bureau that was still in the room for me, and I took a Friday off and decided to get the painting done.  My brother-in-law and sister-in-law (P.J. & Mandy) came up to help me paint.  The walls took less than an hour with their help, and look great.  Zach asked if we could paint the ceiling a pale blue, and since this was the first and only request regarding nursery design that he had, I agreed.  The following day I painted the celing Kilz, Fresh, which is a very pretty pale blue.  Some people say that Kilz paint is horrible.  I personally think that Kilz paint is the best.  You can find it usually at WalMart.  The price is reasonable, and it coats great.  In the nursery, I only had to use one coat for both the walls and the ceiling.  Also, Kilz dries incredibly fast, which is quite handy if you need to do more than one coat.  And if that weren’t enough, Kilz also doesn’t have a very strong smell.  My doctor said that painting with latex paint was safe for me, as long as the room was well ventilated.  I made sure to keep all of the windows open with a box fan sucking air out of the room for both days.  Even without that, the odor of the paint is very minimal, and really didn’t bother me at all.  So, the nursery is painted.  It’s kind of exciting because now it feels like we’re getting a room ready for a new member of the family.  It makes the whole thing seem just a little more real.  I still have to figure out what to do with the floor, and Zach doesn’t seem all that interested in figuring that out, so it looks like that will be up to me as well.  If I have my way, I’ll have a carpet in there before the end of the month, so we’ll see how well that works out…

Also, my friend Jenny gave me a new book called Spirit of the Nursery, which has been quite an interesting read - Thanks Jenny!

Week 24 - Found the Perfect Crib

June 20, 2006

Chelsea 4-in-1 CribMy mother-in-law, Rachel, mentioned that she had seen some very nice convertible cribs in the Burlington Coat Factory in Concord.  “What is a convertible crib?” I asked.  A convertible crib starts as a crib, and can then be “converted” to a toddler bed, and into a day bed or a regular single bed.  I had never heard of this before (though, I admit, I was far from a crib expert before this too…).  So, after browsing the website for a short amount of time, I found the crib that I wanted.  The Chelsea 4-in-1 crib is perfect.  It has everything I want (including a drawer under the bed).  And, the price is right - $159.99.  Of course, then someone asked me what I would do if I had another baby, since this first kid would in theory be sleeping in the original crib, whatever size they were.  My sister-in-law, Mandy suggested that at the price we had found, we could feasibly simply buy another convertible crib, and then not have to worry about beds for the kids for quite a while (though we will need to purchase mattresses once the beds are moved into single or day bed style).  At any rate, the whole crib issue is a load off of my mind, as I was not quite certain what or where we were going to find a crib.  Now I just have to worry about paint, and carpeting…
