Parker Week 5 – I take it back…

February 20, 2009

So a few weeks ago I blogged about Parker being a pooper. Well, apparently he took my comments to heart, and he’s been holding it in now for 3-4 days at a time. Unfortunately, by day 2 or 3 he is really uncomfortable, and not shy about telling us. Sunday through Wednesday if he was awake, he was crying. It made for some very long days for Zach and me…

I attribute this change to the increased amount of formula he’s been having. The addition of formula was anticipated. Once I started working again, he’d had to eat something while I’m gone, and I haven’t been able to produce enough to save up a supply. Parker figured out the bottle like a champ. We’ve been lucky enough to have two kids now who are ok with cold formula (such a time-saver!) which is wonderful. I don’t remember having this much of a transition problem with Xander though.

Finally we called his doctor’s office. They told us not to worry unless it went past a week. They also said if we wanted to do something in the mean time, we could add up to a tablespoon of dark Karo Syrup to his formula. As soon as they mentioned this, both Zach and I thought, “oh yeah…” and remembered that we had used this trick with Xander when he was a baby as well. It’s funny the things you remember and the things that somehow slip your mind in between…

So, the Karo Syrup helped, and now at least we remember not to worry too much if it takes a few days, and hopefully Parker’s system will equalize soon and we’ll stop having these poop explosions twice a week (it’s a rather messy project…)

Baby Week 34 – A Request To Enfamil

December 5, 2008

An interesting side effect of being pregnant or being a new parent is that companies love to give you free samples of stuff.  I can remember getting a free diaper bag filled with Similac supplies, and Enfamil regularly sent me cans of formula or coupons.  Pampers just sent me a diaper, and I’m sure I’ll get some samples from Huggies and Luvs again sometime soon.  It’s great – all that baby paraphernalia can get expensive, and who doesn’t love free stuff, right?

It turns out, there is something free that I don’t love.  Enfamil Next Step.  I wish they would just leave me alone!  I’ve gotten no less than 4 coupons for it in the mail in the last month.  Last week we got a sample canister of it.  Enfamil advertises Next Step as a “milk based formula designed for your 9-24 month old.”  Well, I don’t have a 9-24 month old.  I won’t have one for another 10 months – so your free stuff is not helpful!  When Xander was 9 months old, I asked our pediatrician about it – he said that unless Xander was underweight, or needed some other nutritional supplement, there was no need to switch from regular formula to “Next Step” formula.

Additionally, once kids reach that 12 month mark, you can give them regular milk – whole for the first year, and then reduced fat after that.  Since milk usually hovers around $3 a gallon, and formula costs at least $25 for a can, unless there was some excellent medical or developmental reason to keep your kid on formula, who can afford (or would want) to do that??

So Enfamil Next Step, I’m all set – I’ve got plenty of coupons and free samples that I will never use.  I can understand why you’re having trouble marketing this relatively useless product, but I promise you – I’m not going to be trying it out anytime soon.  How about sending me some free samples of your infant formula instead?  Now that would be useful!

Xander Week 49 – Transitioning to Milk…

August 27, 2007

P1000432.JPGWe have begun Xander’s transition to whole milk. Our pediatrician said that it was ok to start at 11 months, and that he was going to start about then with his son. Since Xander is now 11 months, we decided to give it a try. The first few days, I mixed 2 ounces of milk with 4 ounces of formula, which Xander didn’t seem to mind too much. I figured we’d do that for a week or so, and then increase the amount. Xander’s day care teacher suggested that we try formula bottles in the morning and evening, and then a milk bottle in the afternoon. So yesterday, Xander had a milk bottle in the afternoon at day care, which he seemed to take well. Since the day care teacher has lots more experience with this transition than I do, I figured that taking her advice couldn’t hurt, and Xander seems to be happy with either method. I’m just so excited to see an end to the formula – it’s so expensive, and we could certainly use the extra money around the house!
