Xander Week 43 - We Have Mobility!
July 9, 2007
For quite a while we wondered if Xander would ever crawl, or if he would just skip straight to walking. For the past few weeks, he has gotten very close to crawling, but his balance is getting better, and he’s on the verge of cruising along on furniture. So, when he figured out how to crawl this week, we were happy, and surprised. Xander finally figured out that he can move around under his own power.
This means more hands free time for Zach and me, but more time keeping Xander away from things that he shouldn’t put in his mouth, or things that might topple onto him, etc. Xander has also discovered that everything in our house that isn’t a toy is much more fun to play with than the large box of toys he’s got. Since we can’t put our kid in a bubble, I feel like I’m constantly chasing him around trying to make sure that the rest of the world doesn’t hurt him - it’s keeping me quite busy!
Zach and I spent yesterday baby-proofing as much our house as we could - safety gates, safety knobs, corner protectors, safety plugs, and wires to attach large objects to the walls. I feel like we did a pretty good job, but we’re new at this, and Xander isn’t home to test all of this stuff out yet and show us how much we have to learn when it comes to baby-proofing…
I’ve heard people say that your world changes when you have a baby, and then your world changes again when your baby starts to move. I can certainly agree with the first part, and given the safety gates and knobs I’m now navigating through, I’m guessing there is some truth to the second part, though I haven’t had quite enough experience with it yet to have a definitive answer.
Don’t kid yourself, Sara. Mobile does not mean hands-free parenting, quite the opposite! You just might long for the days when Xander would lay like a lump anywhere you placed him.
I added your blog as a link on mine since I have had a lot of requests from friends who hear me talk about you and Xander. Let me know if you would rather I deleted it and I will understand.
Yay Xander! I really enjoyed seeing you two when I was in NH. Xander is just the cutest and I loved that he’d laugh and clap whenever we all laughed! You are a great mom, Sara!
Hi Sara!
As usual I am loving your blog….I so enjoy seeing the updates on Xander and you and Zach and seeing your family grow and thrive…
Xander is gonna be crusin’ around now! I saw your new pics on Flickr too…man, your little guy just gets cuter every day! And there are a few pics where he looks just like you did as a little baby/child…
Hope all is well in your little corner of the world….

We have a card at the store that says,
“It was so much easier before their legs started working.”
Ha, isnt that true!!! but its so cool… he is like, a little (almost)walking (almost) talking person!!!!
Hi Sara-
I finally leapt ahead and read your current blog. I have only been reading you along with what week I am pregnant(22) and it was nice to skip ahead and see how big Xander is now. He is beautiful.
I LOVE your blog…it’s been a real guidepost.
We found out we are having a girl. It’s my first.
What I wanted to ask is…did you post anywhere things that you feel are “must-have’s” when having a baby? Do you mind perhaps sending me an email with anything you highly suggest I buy for me or the baby? I am very nervous about the whole newborn thing and knowing what to do.
If you have time, I’d love to see your thoughts.
Thanks for everything…especially your Blog!
