If Parker could talk (and form complete logical sentences, sit on his own, and type on a keyboard), I’m pretty sure he might say the following to his parents:
Dear Mom and Dad, I slept great today! Heather says I’m her star napper. My gums hurt a little in the morning, but I forgot all about them after a bottle and a nap. I had fun playing with Rachel and the other kids this afternoon.
I hate that awful green stuff you keep trying to feed me – please put it away! After dinner, I am sooooo sleepy, but I don’t want to sleep because there are so many exciting things happening, but I’m sooooo sleepy, but I want to stay awake, but I’m sooo sleepy….
What do you mean it’s midnight? It feels like I just fell asleep. Don’t you want to play? No, ok, I’ll drink a bottle, and it’s dark so I guess I could sleep for a little while.
It’s only 2:30? Are you sure? I think I’m done sleeping. You don’t think so? Ok, it’s still dark, I’ll try to sleep a little more.
Now it’s got to be morning time. It’s only 4:30? Are you sure? Lets play! I don’t want to go back to sleep, lets play! Hello, is anyone going to play with me? No? I’m going to use my supersonic high pitched scream until someone plays with me! I knew you wanted to play with me (smiles)!
Are you sure it’s only 8am? I’m awfully sleepy…

See the guy in the photo? He changes diapers – at least as many as I do. He gives babies baths. He feeds that sleeping kid a bottle every night when the baby wakes up. He sleeps next to that baby and soothes him back to sleep countless times every night. He reads bedtime stories – and uses voices! He packs diaper bags. He installs car seats. He pushes strollers. He tests crib mattresses. He puts cribs and beds together. He paints nurseries and toddler rooms. He makes dinner! He feeds kids dinner. He gives his kids food off of his own fork! He plays games. He helps to put puzzles together. He colors. He plays with play dough. He finds lost “guys”. He pushes bikes. He plays “basketball”. He pushes kids on swings. He carries babies. He kisses boo-boos. He wrestles. He holds you when you’re sick. He has nearly infinite amounts of patience. He has several episodes of Little Einsteins memorized. He has a whole page of iPhone apps dedicated to entertaining his son. He has been peed on, pooped on, vomited on, spit-up on, drooled on, sneezed on and cried on. He is immeasurably proud of his sons. I cannot imagine a better father for my sons. Whether they realize it or not, they hit the jackpot! Happy Father’s Day (a little belated) Sweetheart. I love you.

My morning: The usual morning craziness that ensues when trying to get 3 boys out the door before 7:30am. Crying baby, slightly cranky toddler and sleepy husband. But, by 7:31 we have all managed to slosh through the puddle that used to be our walkway and settled ourselves into the car (each of us dripping wet from the pouring rain of course). I drop boy #1 off at work and after kisses and hugs goodbye, we slosh off to day care.
The rain continues to pound as I walk around to the passenger’s side of the car to unbuckle Xander. I pull him out of the car and instruct him to walk towards the door, explaining that it’s raining and he’s getting wet. Then I walk back around to the driver’s side and pull Parker’s seat out of the car, and stumble over Xander in the process as he has completely ignored my instructions and for some inexplicable reason thought it would be more fun to stand on my heels.
I get Xander pointed towards the door and start hauling Parker (all 15+ pounds of baby and 8 pounds of car seat…) in the same direction. I finally get Parker under the awning and turn, expecting to see Xander right behind me. Nope, he’s examining rocks in the driveway. With a glare at the sky, I trudge back into the rain to collect my distracted son. The slow poke finally makes it to the door and I pull all three of us inside, shaking off as much water as I can in the process.
I sign the boys in, drop off their check, and Xander opens the door to the green room. We are greeted by another little boy who tells Xander “Guess what! You can watch the whores movie with me today!” I pause, blink, and ask the little boy, “the what movie?” He looks at me like I must be a deaf 90 year old woman and patiently (for a 4 year old) replies “the whores movie”. Xander and I are still standing in our wet rain coats at the threshold of the door. I’m still holding 20+ pounds of fussy Parker in one hand, so I nudge Xander into the room.
I don’t know anything about this kid’s home life, but I’m pretty sure his mom wouldn’t pack him off to school with porn in his backpack, so I wait (somewhat) patiently for more detail about this “whores” movie. Finally, my thick head makes the connection, whores = horse. The boy jogs off to tell more kids about his “whores” movie and I go about settling Xander and Parker and thinking how very glad I am that I won’t be around to watch a movie later today…

I swear we really don’t watch much television with Xander. Parker only catches glimpses every now and then – we’re still trying to limit his viewing intake before he hits two. With Xander, he often watches one episode of Little Einsteins or My Friends Tigger and Pooh while Zach and I are getting ready for work. Depending on what is going on after work (grocery shopping, baths, dinner prep, etc.) he might watch 1/2 an hour or so of a movie (he’s been really into Monster’s Inc. lately), but many nights he gets distracted playing outside, or with toys inside and we don’t turn on the television at all. As a baby, Xander loved to chew on the remote (I think he liked the feeling of the rubbery buttons) and for a while he insisted on “helping” us start whatever show we were playing from the DVR list, but he hasn’t asked to do that in months.
So last week when we told Xander it was time to get dressed and he responded, “Ok, I pause it” and then picked up the remote control and paused Little Einsteins we were a bit shocked. The following day Zach left him watching Tigger and Pooh. When he returned, it Xander wasn’t watching it anymore. Zach asked him what happened to Tigger and Pooh and Xander responded “I stopped it, I’m watching Handy Manny“. Apparently it’s time to set up the parental controls on the television…

April 30, 2009
Today is April 30th. Four months ago today I was lying on a hospital bed and as I type this, I think the surgeons were stitching me up after my C-section. It’s hard to believe that 4 months have flown by. On the other hand, Parker has grown so much that sometimes it’s hard to believe that it’s only been 4 months.
We’ve gotten to know each other pretty well in the past 4 months. Parker continues to enjoy his changing table, but he doesn’t fall asleep on it anymore. He likes to kick his legs, and enjoys making the kick ‘n play light up. He likes his Jumperoo, but only for about 10 minutes at a time. Parker LOVES to chew on his hands, and will sometimes choose hands over his pacifier or even a bottle. Parker also likes to grab and hold onto fabric, and sometimes put that in his mouth as well. Currently, his favorite toy is the blue doggie head rattle with a satin blanket body (courtesy of Matt & Abby - thank you!!) and mostly he loves to chew and drool on it.
Our boy who got so good at sleeping through the night (10pm-6am like clockwork!) has now phased into an infant who wakes up to eat at 2:30, 4:30 and 5:30. I’m hoping that this is just a growth spurt, and he’ll revert back to his good sleeping habits soon – I could certainly use the rest!!
Xander continues to be a wonderful big brother – he “watches” Parker for us, tells us when Parker needs his pacifier or a toy, and kisses him goodnight every night. In our bedtime routine, I always ask Xander what he’s going to dream about, and he always tells me, Parker (it’s very cute).
So, the first 4 months have been pretty great. Parker is becoming more interested in the world around him, and more interactive every day. We’re so lucky to have two such wonderful sons!
