It’s hard for me to believe that Parker is 6 months old today. I can still remember him kicking around in my belly, still remember the excitement I felt the night before he was born, that morning that Zach and I got up before the sun and drove to the hospital. I remember how nervous I felt, how the epidural gave me the shakes, and then holding my breath while the doctors gave Parker his first APGAR score. I can remember holding him for the first time, and snuggling with that little baby burrito for hours and hours. I remember a million more moments after that, but those moments don’t seem so long ago.

Parker is growing so fast. He is already asserting his personality, and he is quite capable of telling us the things that he likes and the things that he doesn’t. At six months, Parker likes the following: Bouncing or jumping, waking up in the morning (always with smiles), cloth or soft toys to chew on, being tickled, bananas, apples, pears, peaches, carrots, squash and sweet potatoes, biter biscuits, his brother, his father, his mother, Mac screensavers, his hands and feet, rolling over, and standing or sitting in the grass.

Parker does not like the following: Being ignored, being alone, green beans, peas, loud noises, falling asleep, teething and getting buckled into his car seat.

Every new milestone is bittersweet for me. I’m so excited to see what Parker will do next, and I can’t wait to meet the little boy he is turning into. On the other hand, every day he grows farther and farther away from that curled up little burrito that I fell in love with six months ago. I know that I’m not going to have any more children, so that was my last chance to enjoy all those infant moments. As happy as I am to know that there will be a day that my whole family will sleep through the night, and that someday we will be done changing diapers, a part of me will always miss those moments with the baby versions of my children.

So, happy six-month birthday little man – you make me happy every day and continually surprise me with your antics. And even though you are growing faster than I am ready for, know that you will always be my baby.
(Thank you Abby for letting us borrow it!)

He has also started to outgrow some of his newborn clothes. It’s exciting to change up the wardrobe so frequently when kids are small, but a part of me is sad – I’ll never use those newborn clothes again, and once he is completely out of the 0-3 month stuff, we’ll start selling it to the second-hand store… I’m perfectly happy and content with the family I have – I don’t want any more children, but it’s still a little sad to see them grow so quickly…

At one of my recent doctor visits I mentioned that I was feeling significantly more movement from this baby than I had with the first. It wasn’t really a complaint, more of an observation. My doctor suggested that perhaps I was feeling more because my uterine wall had thinned after the first pregnancy, so I was able to feel movement more often than I had with Xander. “Ok, I thought, that makes sense.”

After I left, I continued to ponder this theory, and it seemed to make even more sense – Xander’s kicks, while strong at times were never painful. This little guy is able to take my breath away and stop me in my tracks with just one well placed foot or elbow. I guess Xander really did do a good job thinning out that uterine wall, because I’m much more sensitive to movement this time around.

It’s sort of a double edged sword sort of situation – I love feeling the baby kick, knowing that he’s moving and doing well in there, and that I should enjoy these movements, because they are likely the last I will ever feel like this… On the other hand, there are moments when I would love some peace and quiet, just a few minutes without hiccups or kicks, but it’s not like I can reason or plead with the kid yet.

The image here is not my belly – though there are times when you can see it rolling in a manner similar to Alien. However, that little foot is an excellent portrayal of how I feel 45% of my day.

So, for the next few weeks I’m doing my best to enjoy the movement as much as possible and hope that the schedule he’s developed in the womb is vastly different from the one that we’ll have once he gets out

16 Week Fetus

I always assumed that with my second pregnancy I would be able to feel movement earlier, and I would recognize it as soon as it started. As with most assumptions, I was wrong. I remember what it felt like to have Xander bouncing around in there, but it’s hard to recall specifically what that initial movement felt like. Additionally, it’s so easy to convince myself that it was just a belly gurgle or gas or some other bodily process going on in there, and not actual fetal movement.

This past Sunday I was riding around on some pretty bumpy unpaved roads up on a mountain (that’s another story all together). I was pretty convinced that I could feel this little baby wiggling around as we rode. But, I didn’t feel much movement after that – not for a few days. Every once in a while I’ll think “maybe?” but then I’m not sure. This morning again, I thought I felt some wiggling, but it’s so faint that it’s hard to say definitively one way or another.

I’m not worried about not feeling movement yet – with Xander it was 19 weeks, and with some women it’s even later than that. They say that with your second (and later pregnancies) you feel movement sooner, partially because you know what to expect. Maybe I am feeling movement sooner, but it’s so easy to say “nah, that was something else” that I’m still not sure. I guess I’m waiting for a single definitive boot to the bladder to let me know that he or she is moving around in there.

Speaking of he or she – we have our ultrasound scheduled for August 7th at 8am. We are hoping that this child will be more cooperative than Xander was at telling us the gender prior to birth. Please keep your fingers crossed for us – this could be a huge help in the name negotiation game!
