Parker Week 13 – The first overnight…

April 22, 2009

Last week I started my new job (hooray!) and last Friday day care was closed (staff sanity day). Obviously, I couldn’t take Friday off – it was my first week! Zach had several meetings he didn’t want to miss. So, we asked my mother and sister if they wouldn’t mind watching the boys for us. To make life easier since we live over an hour away, I dropped the boys off on Thursday night. This was Parker’s very first overnight visit, and his first night away from me. Zach went to Philadelphia last month, and Xander has spent the night with grandparents on a few occasions. I had been the one constant since birth, so it was a little hard for me to leave him – especially since he was fussy, and crying when I walked out the door. However, I’m told he calmed down pretty quickly, and after waking up at midnight to eat and get changed, he slept well and was pretty happy and engaging on Friday :-) Xander of course did just fine, as he always does with his grandparents.

The evening and morning for Zach and me was surprisingly relaxing. We had to get up for work, but after sleeping through the night uninterrupted, we woke up around 6:00 am feeling refreshed. We had time to shower, get dressed (I even put on makeup!), read email and drink tea before leaving for work. It was an amazingly relaxing morning, and I could finally see how people find time to do stuff in the mornings before going to work.

I also had a revelation about getting older and waking up earlier. As a teenager and young adult, I could never understand why my parents got up so early in the day. Now I get it – my sister and I forced them to change their routines when we were little, and they never got out of the habit. I can see that happening to Zach and myself now too. Before children, we could easily sleep until 10am or 11am in the morning. Now, we wake up naturally at 6am and feel refreshed, and actually enjoy having more time during the day to do things. Yep, we’re getting old, but so far, I’m ok with it.
