Xander Week 119 – Reading

June 16, 2009

Xander loves books – to be read to and sometimes to read to us.  We always read books before bed, and he of course has his favorites (which often are not my favorites or Zach’s favorites…)  One that the three of us actually all enjoy is The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear.  Lately Xander has been reading some of his books to us, and we find them quite entertaining.  So, if Zach happens to be reading books to Xander, and Xander decides he wants to “read” Zach will sometimes record the audio on his iPhone.  Last week he decided to pair the audio with the book (it helps for those of you who do not have the book memorized).  So, if you’re looking for some entertaining audio to go along with your book reading, check out the video ;-)

Say what?

June 12, 2009

My morning: The usual morning craziness that ensues when trying to get 3 boys out the door before 7:30am.  Crying baby, slightly cranky toddler and sleepy husband.  But, by 7:31 we have all managed to slosh through the puddle that used to be our walkway and settled ourselves into the car (each of us dripping wet from the pouring rain of course).  I drop boy #1 off at work and after kisses and hugs goodbye, we slosh off to day care.

The rain continues to pound as I walk around to the passenger’s side of the car to unbuckle Xander.  I pull him out of the car and instruct him to walk towards the door, explaining that it’s raining and he’s getting wet.  Then I walk back around to the driver’s side and pull Parker’s seat out of the car, and stumble over Xander in the process as he has completely ignored my instructions and for some inexplicable reason thought it would be more fun to stand on my heels.

I get Xander pointed towards the door and start hauling Parker (all 15+ pounds of baby and 8 pounds of car seat…) in the same direction.  I finally get Parker under the awning and turn, expecting to see Xander right behind me.  Nope, he’s examining rocks in the driveway.  With a glare at the sky, I trudge back into the rain to collect my distracted son.  The slow poke finally makes it to the door and I pull all three of us inside, shaking off as much water as I can in the process.

I sign the boys in, drop off their check, and Xander opens the door to the green room.  We are greeted by another little boy who tells Xander “Guess what! You can watch the whores movie with me today!”  I pause, blink, and ask the little boy, “the what movie?”  He looks at me like I must be a deaf 90 year old woman and patiently (for a 4 year old) replies “the whores movie”.  Xander and I are still standing in our wet rain coats at the threshold of the door.  I’m still holding 20+ pounds of fussy Parker in one hand, so I nudge Xander into the room.

I don’t know anything about this kid’s home life, but I’m pretty sure his mom wouldn’t pack him off to school with porn in his backpack, so I wait (somewhat) patiently for more detail about this “whores” movie.  Finally, my thick head makes the connection, whores = horse.  The boy jogs off to tell more kids about his “whores” movie and I go about settling Xander and Parker and thinking how very glad I am that I won’t be around to watch a movie later today…

Parker Week 22 – Sooooo Close!

June 12, 2009

I know most babies are supposed to start rolling over sometime around 4 or 5 months.  Xander was 7 months old before he figured it out and boy was I stressed out that he had some sort of delay betweens months 4 and 7!  Of course he doesn’t – he is just fine, but you couldn’t convince my “new mom” head that everything was going to be ok.

Luckily, I’ve already gotten most of that stress out of the way, so the fact that Parker isn’t quite rolling over at 5 months hasn’t started my worry meter yet.  He is much more patient with tummy time than Xander was, but as you’ll see from the picture, Parker is more interested in rolling when he starts from his back.  The day we took this picture we were certain he was finally going to get all the way over – he was so close!  He just keeps getting stuck on that darn shoulder.  I just know he’s going to get it figured out any day now – I can’t believe how fast he’s growing!  Wasn’t he just recognizing my face just a few weeks ago?

Parker Week 21 – Mmmm, Food….

June 10, 2009
Nom nom nom... Rice Cereal....

Nom nom nom...

It’s tough to know when to start feeding your kid solid foods.  Doctors will tell you that they don’t need the nutrients from solid foods before six months.  Old school parents will tell you that your kid will sleep better at night if you start feeding them solids earlier.  Baby websites will tell you to look for signs – interest in your food, the “explusion reflex” (the reflex that makes their little tongues push everything out of their mouths) goes away, they can sit (with help) well on their own, etc.

Parker is in the middle of his 5th month.  He’s been staring at our food for weeks.  He no longer spits everything out of his mouth – in fact, I’m pretty sure he wants to put the entire world into it.  Also, he’s gotten so that when he’s really hungry he can put down 10-12 ounces of formula in a sitting (it used to be 4 ounces every meal).

So about 3 weeks ago we started feeding him rice cereal once a day.  He loved it!  For those of you who are unfamiliar with rice cereal, it’s the most bland substance on earth.  It comes in dry powder form, and you mix it with formula (or breast milk) so that it’s a soupy oatmeal-like substance.  The theory is that there is a much lower potential for an allergic reaction, so it’s a good first step for babies.

With Xander we had to sort of teach him how to open his mouth when the spoon arrived.  Parker just opens, and then swallows when the food is in there.  It was so much easier to start feeding Parker.  And after a week or so, he was ready for a second meal in the middle of the day.  So 2 weeks ago I brought rice cereal to day care so they can feed him some solids too.  I haven’t seen it yet, but the little girl who is 4 days older than Parker eats about the same time, and I’m told it’s quite adorable when they are snacking together.

Last week we started on foods that are more interesting than rice cereal.  The experts say that when introducing new foods you should wait 3 days in between new foods.  That way, if the baby does have an allergic reaction you’ll know which food they are allergic to.  The first week we started out slow – just some peaches for the first 3 days.  Then bananas and finally over the weekend pears.  Parker seems to enjoy the new flavors, though he takes each one with this sort of confused, pondering look at first – it’s quite cute.

This week we’ve added prunes to the menu.  And we’ll start on some vegetables this week as well.  Most babies are big fans of the sweeter veggies like squash and sweet potatoes.  I’m not sure if there is anything more disgusting looking than baby peas.  I can’t remember if we ever subjected Xander to that particular miserable experience, but there are peas waiting for Parker in our cupboard – poor kid has no idea what he is in store for him this week ;-)
