It’s tough to know when to start feeding your kid solid foods. Doctors will tell you that they don’t need the nutrients from solid foods before six months. Old school parents will tell you that your kid will sleep better at night if you start feeding them solids earlier. Baby websites will tell you to look for signs – interest in your food, the “explusion reflex” (the reflex that makes their little tongues push everything out of their mouths) goes away, they can sit (with help) well on their own, etc.
Parker is in the middle of his 5th month. He’s been staring at our food for weeks. He no longer spits everything out of his mouth – in fact, I’m pretty sure he wants to put the entire world into it. Also, he’s gotten so that when he’s really hungry he can put down 10-12 ounces of formula in a sitting (it used to be 4 ounces every meal).
So about 3 weeks ago we started feeding him rice cereal once a day. He loved it! For those of you who are unfamiliar with rice cereal, it’s the most bland substance on earth. It comes in dry powder form, and you mix it with formula (or breast milk) so that it’s a soupy oatmeal-like substance. The theory is that there is a much lower potential for an allergic reaction, so it’s a good first step for babies.
With Xander we had to sort of teach him how to open his mouth when the spoon arrived. Parker just opens, and then swallows when the food is in there. It was so much easier to start feeding Parker. And after a week or so, he was ready for a second meal in the middle of the day. So 2 weeks ago I brought rice cereal to day care so they can feed him some solids too. I haven’t seen it yet, but the little girl who is 4 days older than Parker eats about the same time, and I’m told it’s quite adorable when they are snacking together.
Last week we started on foods that are more interesting than rice cereal. The experts say that when introducing new foods you should wait 3 days in between new foods. That way, if the baby does have an allergic reaction you’ll know which food they are allergic to. The first week we started out slow – just some peaches for the first 3 days. Then bananas and finally over the weekend pears. Parker seems to enjoy the new flavors, though he takes each one with this sort of confused, pondering look at first – it’s quite cute.
This week we’ve added prunes to the menu. And we’ll start on some vegetables this week as well. Most babies are big fans of the sweeter veggies like squash and sweet potatoes. I’m not sure if there is anything more disgusting looking than baby peas. I can’t remember if we ever subjected Xander to that particular miserable experience, but there are peas waiting for Parker in our cupboard – poor kid has no idea what he is in store for him this week
