It’s Been 4 Months Already??

April 30, 2009

Today is April 30th. Four months ago today I was lying on a hospital bed and as I type this, I think the surgeons were stitching me up after my C-section. It’s hard to believe that 4 months have flown by. On the other hand, Parker has grown so much that sometimes it’s hard to believe that it’s only been 4 months.

We’ve gotten to know each other pretty well in the past 4 months. Parker continues to enjoy his changing table, but he doesn’t fall asleep on it anymore. He likes to kick his legs, and enjoys making the kick ‘n play light up. He likes his Jumperoo, but only for about 10 minutes at a time. Parker LOVES to chew on his hands, and will sometimes choose hands over his pacifier or even a bottle. Parker also likes to grab and hold onto fabric, and sometimes put that in his mouth as well. Currently, his favorite toy is the blue doggie head rattle with a satin blanket body (courtesy of Matt & Abby - thank you!!) and mostly he loves to chew and drool on it.

Our boy who got so good at sleeping through the night (10pm-6am like clockwork!) has now phased into an infant who wakes up to eat at 2:30, 4:30 and 5:30. I’m hoping that this is just a growth spurt, and he’ll revert back to his good sleeping habits soon – I could certainly use the rest!!

Xander continues to be a wonderful big brother – he “watches” Parker for us, tells us when Parker needs his pacifier or a toy, and kisses him goodnight every night. In our bedtime routine, I always ask Xander what he’s going to dream about, and he always tells me, Parker (it’s very cute).

So, the first 4 months have been pretty great. Parker is becoming more interested in the world around him, and more interactive every day. We’re so lucky to have two such wonderful sons!

New Stroller!

April 29, 2009

Shortly after finding out I was pregnant my at times overly stressed mind started planning out what new supplies we would need to purchase for our new addition. A new stroller was near the top of the list.

Luckily, we’ve been able to put off this purchase for Parker’s first four months. Winter in New England isn’t a great time to be strolling outside with a newborn. So I spent a few months researching double strollers.

Zach and I both agreed that the side-by-side versions wouldn’t work for us – they’re too wide for many of the areas we’d be going, and we just weren’t interested in the added inconvenience. So, it would have to be a single-wide stroller with a front and back. Unfortunately, it seems like the kid in the back seat often gets shafted when it comes to views. Also, the older Xander gets, the less interested he is in riding in any sort of stroller. He wants to walk on his own.

After lots of research, we settled on the Babytrend Sit ‘n Stand. It’s got a regular front stroller seat, and according to the advertisement, most infant seats fit into it. I know our Chicco Key 30 seat fits just fine, and there is a strap to buckle the seat securely into place. The best part about this stroller is the sit/stand option for Xander. There is a small bench seat (with buckle) that Xander can sit on the back, facing the driver. If he prefers, he can stand on a small platform (again with a safety buckle) and face forward. I researched and we test drove many strollers before settling on this one, and so far, we’re very happy with the purchase! The stroller folds down into about the same size as a regular stroller (except for the hood, which we’ve been removing since it doesn’t fold down far enough).

Initially, I was thinking that we’d go with the Sit ‘n Stand Plus, which converts that bench seat into a regular stroller seat, but for the amount that we’d use it, it seemed like a waste of money (plus, they didn’t have any in the store that we could test drive).

So, if you’re looking into double strollers, I highly recommend checking this one out!

Xander Week 113 – Fun Times at the Park

April 27, 2009
Xander and Friend in the park

Xander and Friend in the park

We are fortunate to have a few couples in and around town who have children close in age to ours (well, two of them are still “in the oven”, but they’ll be relatively close to Parker in age when they finally arrive). Last weekend all six adults and 4 children met at the local park. It was lots of fun to watch the kids and parents playing together. I thought that after an hour or so, we’d all be ready to head our separate ways, but over 2 hours later, the parents were ready to drag the kids off to lunch and/or naps.

It’s great to have friends who are also parents in the area. We’re planning a trip the the New England Aquarium soon, and I trust we’ll all have a good time. My parents have a core group of friends who all had kids about my age and my sister’s age. We are still close with several of these “kids”.

I remember fondly many of the shenanigans us kids got into years and years ago and I hope this little band of children will have the opportunity to develop similar happy memories.

Parker Week 13 – The first overnight…

April 22, 2009

Last week I started my new job (hooray!) and last Friday day care was closed (staff sanity day). Obviously, I couldn’t take Friday off – it was my first week! Zach had several meetings he didn’t want to miss. So, we asked my mother and sister if they wouldn’t mind watching the boys for us. To make life easier since we live over an hour away, I dropped the boys off on Thursday night. This was Parker’s very first overnight visit, and his first night away from me. Zach went to Philadelphia last month, and Xander has spent the night with grandparents on a few occasions. I had been the one constant since birth, so it was a little hard for me to leave him – especially since he was fussy, and crying when I walked out the door. However, I’m told he calmed down pretty quickly, and after waking up at midnight to eat and get changed, he slept well and was pretty happy and engaging on Friday :-) Xander of course did just fine, as he always does with his grandparents.

The evening and morning for Zach and me was surprisingly relaxing. We had to get up for work, but after sleeping through the night uninterrupted, we woke up around 6:00 am feeling refreshed. We had time to shower, get dressed (I even put on makeup!), read email and drink tea before leaving for work. It was an amazingly relaxing morning, and I could finally see how people find time to do stuff in the mornings before going to work.

I also had a revelation about getting older and waking up earlier. As a teenager and young adult, I could never understand why my parents got up so early in the day. Now I get it – my sister and I forced them to change their routines when we were little, and they never got out of the habit. I can see that happening to Zach and myself now too. Before children, we could easily sleep until 10am or 11am in the morning. Now, we wake up naturally at 6am and feel refreshed, and actually enjoy having more time during the day to do things. Yep, we’re getting old, but so far, I’m ok with it.

Xander Week 112 – Where Did My Kid Go?

April 17, 2009

We have all heard the term “terrible twos” and then there are some out there who swear that three is actually worse than two. I can’t speak to the “terrible threes” – we aren’t there yet. I can agree with people who say that the “terrible twos” really aren’t so terrible.  There was a good article on Strollerderby about it this week.

The first half of the second year has been great. Xander is funny, kind, polite (most of the time) and generally agreeable. When he gets upset it usually isn’t too difficult to distract him away from tears.

Last week (when Parker was sick) was an entirely different story. If it was a sign of what is to come in the next year, then I want a do-over of this year, or at least the ability to Rumpelstiltskin my way though the upcoming year.

It was awful. Every evening was just a series of battles. Xander please pick up your puzzle, Xander please don’t chase the cat. Xander please don’t step on your brother. Xander please eat your vegetables. Xander please get into the bathtub. And on and on we went. And every request was met with opposition, argument and outright defiance.

Wednesday night, after asking nicely several times, then threatening “trouble” and then threatening time out, Xander finally picked up his puzzle. As soon as the last piece as in the box, the little imp looked at me, and then proceeded to turn the box upside down, emptying the contents all over the carpet (again!) He got a 2 minute time out for that one, though it was as much for me as it was for him. Most nights Zach and I couldn’t wait for bedtime, just so we could have a break.

Thankfully, by Friday Xander had returned. They say that you have to have valleys to appreciate the hills. After a week of battling with the two-year-old terror, we were thrilled to have our sweet child back, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the little guy that we know and love. However, I am worried that as we get closer and closer to that third year, we might start to see this defiant kid more and more often. I’m not quite sure what we’re going to do with him…
