Parker Week 2 – What we know so far…

Parker in the hospital

Parker in the hospital

As anyone with a new baby can tell you, it takes a while to figure out how to communicate with the new little person. I think it’s easier to figure out your subsequent children after going through the trial and error method with your first. As my friend Melissa explained to me after having her second child, she thinks the second baby is more relaxed because she and her husband are more relaxed as parents, and I think she’s right. With Xander every time he cried we went down through the list – do you need your diaper changed, do you need to be cuddled, are you hungry, etc. With Parker, we don’t rush in immediately, we take the time to try to figure out the clues – when did you eat last? Could you be hungry, or are you just fussy? When did we last change your diaper, are you due for another change? Spending that extra few minutes to watch his body clues has helped us to figure him out faster than we did with Xander. This is what we’ve figured out so far: He likes to eat every 4 hours, pretty much like clockwork. If he cries in between, it’s not usually because he’s hungry. He likes to sleep at a 45 degree angle, and sleeps most soundly in someone’s arms, but takes great naps – often in his car seat. He likes his pacifier sometimes, but not all the time – he prefers his fingers when he can find them. Unlike his brother, Parker will tolerate tummy time for 2-3 minutes before complaining. He can’t do much while he’s there, but he doesn’t complain about it. When he’s awake (which isn’t very often yet), he most often has a furrowed brow, as if he is puzzled about something. Since pretty much everything he is seeing is new to him, I supposed being puzzled or confused isn’t a big surprise. He is adorable, beautiful, and so far a very content little kid – I can’t imagine having a better second child – we are very, very lucky parents!

ps. For friends and family, Parker had his 2 week checkup today – he’s doing great. He’s up to 7 lbs, 13 oz!

Xander Week 103 – Such A Good Big Brother!

The boys

The boys

The most asked questions we’ve had since Parker was born (aside from how is the baby) is how is Xander doing with the baby. Well, Xander is doing great! He has been a wonderful big brother. He’s been patient with both Zach and me (and patience for a 2 year old is impressive!) He loves to bring things to Parker – blankets, pacifiers, toys, etc. It’s very cute. He thinks that anything he might want is something that Parker might want. Xander has been slightly insistent that Parker play with or hold a toy – he doesn’t quite understand the whole concept of babies not wanting toys, and also insistent that Parker wants/needs his pacifier even if he isn’t interested (like when he’s nursing…) Overall, I’ve been pleasantly surprised and pleased with Xander’s reaction to his new brother. I imagine at some point Parker will show an interest in a toy Xander doesn’t want to share, and this honeymoon period will end, but for now my super sweet and empathic son is a wonderful big brother!

Parker Week 1 – We’re home!

January 3, 2009

Parker, Zach and I arrived home on the second. Our first night home was nice and relatively quiet, though Parker woke up 4 times in the night to eat… We definitely don’t have a schedule figured out yet. It was nice to sit on my furniture and sleep in my bed though. Aside from a headache that won’t quit (we think it’s leftover from the spinal injection during the surgery) we are all doing well. After the rough night Parker slept ’till 10am! We relaxed and hung out most of the day. Parker had his first sponge bath this afternoon – it’s never a fun experience, but he survived pretty well and was much happier after he was bundled and had a little dinner ;-) Thank you to everyone for the congrats and well wishes – it’s nice to hear from everyone!
