Week 27 – Baby Hiccups

June 26, 2006

Fetus, 27 weeksAs predicted, the baby has been moving more frequently and seems to be getting stronger by the day.  This week, the baby had its first bout of hiccups (or at least the first since I’ve been able to feel movement…).  And in true child fashion, the hiccups couldn’t have happened in the middle of the day, or while I was watching tv at night – nope, the hiccups started right around 11pm, when I was just settling down to sleep.  At first, I felt the rhthmic movement and wondered what that was all about.  Then I recalled reading something about baby hiccups at Baby Center.  Of course, as I recalled the article, I remembered that they simply mentioned hiccups, as in “your baby may even have hiccups” before moving onto the next thought.  I couldn’t recall a single piece of literature that had any suggestions on how to treat baby hiccups.  Since it was Thursday, and Zach was playing video games on campus, I wasn’t able to easily tell him of this new discomfort.  So, I called his cell phone.  Zach was quite entertained at the though of my jiggling uterus, and half-heartedly suggested that I drink water while doing some jumping jacks.  Some of our other friends had some more colorful suggestions that are not worth repeating here.  In the end, I simply had to wait it out.  I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to sleep with a jiggling uterus, but I’m pretty sure that it isn’t possible.  The baby had hiccups again this week, but at least the second bout happened at work, so I was able to continue working while my uterus jiggled that time, and the hiccups were not nearly as inconvenient.  So, if anyone has any suggestions for curing baby hiccups, I would love to hear them, as I have a feeling that will not be the only time the baby thinks jiggling my uterus while I’m trying to sleep is a good idea.

Week 26 – Painting the Nursery

June 20, 2006

Painting NurseryThis week we painted the nursery.  When we bought the house a little over two years ago, we spent a week going through the entire house and took down all of the wallpaper and carpeting, and painted all of the walls white, and all of the already painted trip a buttery yellow.  Since then, we have been going slowly from room to room, repainting and decorating in colors that we plan to keep for a while.  Since I found the perfect wallpaper border at Dreamtime Baby (Lillypad Wallpaper Border), I had decided to use yellow and green in the nursery.  For a while I debated whether to paint the walls yellow and the trim green or vice versa.  As the trim is already yellow from the first painting, I finally decided to save myself some work and simply paint the walls green.  My mother and sister (Cait) helped me pick out the right shade of green, which turned out to be Kilz, Tea Garden.  They also helped me clean out the nursery, and organize the other room, which has recently become Zach’s closet/storage area.  Zach then moved the bed and bureau that was still in the room for me, and I took a Friday off and decided to get the painting done.  My brother-in-law and sister-in-law (P.J. & Mandy) came up to help me paint.  The walls took less than an hour with their help, and look great.  Zach asked if we could paint the ceiling a pale blue, and since this was the first and only request regarding nursery design that he had, I agreed.  The following day I painted the celing Kilz, Fresh, which is a very pretty pale blue.  Some people say that Kilz paint is horrible.  I personally think that Kilz paint is the best.  You can find it usually at WalMart.  The price is reasonable, and it coats great.  In the nursery, I only had to use one coat for both the walls and the ceiling.  Also, Kilz dries incredibly fast, which is quite handy if you need to do more than one coat.  And if that weren’t enough, Kilz also doesn’t have a very strong smell.  My doctor said that painting with latex paint was safe for me, as long as the room was well ventilated.  I made sure to keep all of the windows open with a box fan sucking air out of the room for both days.  Even without that, the odor of the paint is very minimal, and really didn’t bother me at all.  So, the nursery is painted.  It’s kind of exciting because now it feels like we’re getting a room ready for a new member of the family.  It makes the whole thing seem just a little more real.  I still have to figure out what to do with the floor, and Zach doesn’t seem all that interested in figuring that out, so it looks like that will be up to me as well.  If I have my way, I’ll have a carpet in there before the end of the month, so we’ll see how well that works out…

Also, my friend Jenny gave me a new book called Spirit of the Nursery, which has been quite an interesting read – Thanks Jenny!

Week 25 – Zach is in the Dog House

June 20, 2006

ZachSeveral months ago (I think somewhere around my 4 month check-up) we signed up for Childbirth Classes.  The classes are offered through my ObGyn office, and are of course highly recommended for new parents.  The 8 week class covers lamaz, basic child birth information, etc. and then one class on infant care and one class on breast feeding.  For two months I have been talking about how the class starts on June 27th.  I even asked Zach to switch his racket ball/video game night from Thursday to Tuesday so that he would be available to go with me to the classes on Tuesday nights (the switch ended up working out better for him and the group anyway).  So, this week, Zach tells me that a conference he previously thought he would be unable to attend, he is now going to.  And of course, he will be gone Tuesday night, the 27th, so I will be the only loser in the very first class with no partner.  The conference is good for Zach, and something he has been very much looking forward to.  What’s more irritating?  It’s in Burlington, VT, where I have wanted to spend a long weekend with Zach for at least five years – it is such a pretty city with so much to do.  Zach’s boss, Ken, is actually taking his wife as an anniversary present.  So, not only is Zach going to miss our first class, but he’s going to a city that I have wanted the two of us to go to for years.  Needless to say, I didn’t hold back any pregnancy emotions in expressing my irritation at this latest development.  As, Steven Colbert would say, Shibboleth is “dead to me“.  Stupid Shibboleth.

Week 24 – Found the Perfect Crib

June 20, 2006

Chelsea 4-in-1 CribMy mother-in-law, Rachel, mentioned that she had seen some very nice convertible cribs in the Burlington Coat Factory in Concord.  “What is a convertible crib?” I asked.  A convertible crib starts as a crib, and can then be “converted” to a toddler bed, and into a day bed or a regular single bed.  I had never heard of this before (though, I admit, I was far from a crib expert before this too…).  So, after browsing the website for a short amount of time, I found the crib that I wanted.  The Chelsea 4-in-1 crib is perfect.  It has everything I want (including a drawer under the bed).  And, the price is right – $159.99.  Of course, then someone asked me what I would do if I had another baby, since this first kid would in theory be sleeping in the original crib, whatever size they were.  My sister-in-law, Mandy suggested that at the price we had found, we could feasibly simply buy another convertible crib, and then not have to worry about beds for the kids for quite a while (though we will need to purchase mattresses once the beds are moved into single or day bed style).  At any rate, the whole crib issue is a load off of my mind, as I was not quite certain what or where we were going to find a crib.  Now I just have to worry about paint, and carpeting…

Week 23 – Baby Jumping Jacks?

June 20, 2006

Fetus - Week 23I have no doubt about baby movement anymore.  I have noticed that in the mornings and evenings my kids likes to get some exercises by doing some jumping jacks around my stomach.  When I can feel kicks/punches in two or three locations at once, I know that kid is busy in there.  I’m not sure if the baby is saying “hey Mom, what’s up?” or “geeze it’s tight in here!”  Either way, if I get up to use the bathroom at 4am, I can be almost certain that a few minutes later my kid will be busy with the workout routine.  I did finally get Zach to feel the movement.  The baby was kicking hard one night, and Zach was able to feel the hard kicks, which quite entertained him, though I didn’t find the discomfort all that funny…  The literature I’ve read says that I’ll be able to notice a routine in the baby’s movements after a while.  The movements aren’t always a guarantee in the mornings or evenings, but the baby seems to prefer those times over the middle of the day, which is a plus, since they can be somewhat distracting in the middle of meetings, etc.  I wouldn’t say that baby movement is exactly comfortable or fun, but I do find it reassuring when the baby kicks, it reminds me that things are still going along as they should in there.
